Description
House, built in 1935 by Adrian Gilbert Scott, in the Hampstead Garden Suburb. The house is constructed of brick with a hipped pantile roof. It is rectangular in plan with a one-window range to the recessed outer bays. A recessed porch, formed from the roof of a projecting entrance range, spans most of the main elevation, topped by a parapet band of bricks laid in soldier courses, which extends around the building. The windows are original Georgian-style sashes, and there are cubic axial stacks to the returns. The architecture displays a clear influence of the Modern manner, reminiscent of Frank Lloyd Wright’s California houses of the early 1920s. A notable feature is the hemicycle terracing to the rear, which steps up the hillside. All windows are of an original design. The interior includes a grand entrance hall, two storeys in height, with apsidal ends and a curving stair, incorporating Adam-style mouldings and wall treatments. The design blends historicist detail with a Modernist feeling for mass and form.
