Description
This is a terrace of eleven artisans' cottages built in 1908, forming the end of Asmun’s Place within the Hampstead Garden Suburb. The design is attributed to Barry Parker and Raymond Unwin, with possible involvement from Charles Wade, an office assistant known for numerous designs in the suburb. The cottages are constructed of brown brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with tile insets, gable kneelers, and wood shingles to the gable ends of the crosswings and gable-facing dormers. The roofs are tiled, with swept eaves and exposed rafter ends.
The architectural style is Vernacular Revival, representing a unique adaptation of the double-ended hall house type. The design is bilaterally symmetrical. The eaves of the crosswings align with the main roofline, while the eaves extend further down externally. A broad, round-arched cross passage, constructed of red brick with tile voussoirs, is centrally positioned, leading to the rear garden. Above this arch is a small dormer window. Ground-floor openings are segmental arched, featuring tile insets in the tympanum, while other windows are flat-arched and have original casement designs.
The recessed porches for Nos. 49 and 55 are accessed through round diaphragm arches set at the inside corners of the crosswings. The central pair of cottages have entrances on a chamfered corner just inside the round-arched passage. Entrances to Nos. 47 and 57 are within the crosswings, with all doors being of original design, except for the door at No. 47. The end units have their entrances on the rear. Ridge stacks are present on the party walls of the end units, and between Nos. 49 and 51, and 53 and 55.
