Description
Nos 1 to 9 Lancaster Gate is a terrace of houses built around 1860-1870. The houses are made of stucco and feature slate mansard roofs. The design is almost symmetrical, with four storeys, an attic, and a basement. Each house has three windows across the front. The ground floor has channelling, and the centre and end houses are slightly set forward, featuring rusticated quoins. The houses have solid-sided Doric porches with square piers, except for the centre house, which has a three-bay Doric colonnade. There are canted bay windows on the ground floor and a balustraded balcony on the first floor. The first-floor windows are roundheaded, while the centre and end houses have square-headed windows within segmental bow windows. Above the ground floor, the windows have architraves, and those above the first floor are square-headed. The windows are sashes with plate glass. There are cornices between the storeys, with a pediment over the second-floor windows and a rich console cornice above the third floor, along with a subsidiary cornice for the attic. The centre and end houses feature arched attic windows, and the centre house has a segmental attic pediment. Cast iron area railings complete the design.
