Description

The Church of the Annunciation is a Grade II* listed building located on Bryanston Street in the City of Westminster. It was constructed between 1912 and 1913 by Sir Walter Tapper. The church is built from red brick with stone dressings and features a slate roof. It showcases a Late Gothic Revival style characterized by a strong vertical emphasis, with a bold simplicity that balances blind walls with windows and a restrained use of carved ornament.

The church consists of a hall nave and chancel with eight bays, along with a north aisle. The south front facing Bryanston Street includes a two-storey stone-faced porch at the west end, which features figure sculptures in niches above a portal with shafted jambs. The porch aligns with bold gabled buttresses that separate the eight bays, which are blind up to the tall clerestory, illuminated by four-light reticulated tracery windows. The parapet is topped with weathered coping.

On the east gable end facing Old Quebec Street, similar buttresses flank a large east window that has a crisply carved reticulated tracery pattern. Above the aisle parapet, a flying buttress extends from the right-hand gabled bell tower, which has a vestry entrance at its base. Railings along the street are positioned between buttress piers with gable caps. The steeply pitched roof is topped with a slender, copper-clad fleche and gablets at the center of the ridge. The interior features a vaulted design with a lofty, slender shafted arcade and triforium on the north side, along with a gilt altar by Bewsey.
