Description

No. 28, South Street is a former stable building, rebuilt as a small town house in 1902-03, designed by Detmar Blow, with some internal detailing by Fernand Billerey. The building is constructed of stone-dressed red brick with a slate roof. It is an example of late 17th-century English vernacular revival architecture, featuring quoins, a modillion eaves cornice, and prominent dormers. The house is three storeys high, with a basement and attic, and is five windows wide. The central entrance has a stone architrave doorcase with a scrolled open pediment. The sash windows have nearly flush frames, with flat-gauged rubbed brick arches and keystones. A modillion bracketed eaves detail runs around the building. Barrel-vaulted sashed dormers light the attic. Flanking corniced chimney stacks are present. Elaborate, French-inspired ironwork, ramped between finialed, panelled standards, leads to the area before the entrance. The detailing throughout the front showcases fine Arts and Crafts workmanship. The interiors are of a high quality, with a spacious timber staircase designed in the late 17th-century manner.
