Description
No. 26 South Street is a former stables or coach house built around 1833-34, possibly designed by Gandy Deering. The building was altered either in the early 20th century or in the late 1920s when an extra storey was added. It is constructed of stock brick with a channelled stucco ground floor and has a slate roof. The structure stands three storeys high with a dormered mansard and is five windows wide. The large central semicircular arched doorway, which features a fanlight, was once the covered way to the stables and is flanked by two large similar windows. The upper floors have recessed glazing bar sashes set under flat gauged arches. A later bracketed stone cornice and blocking course complete the exterior.
