Description
No. 23 South Street is a terraced house located on the corner and is part of the Balfour Mews development, built between 1898 and 1899 by Balfour and Turner. An entrance bay was added in 1913, approved by Thackeray Turner, to enhance its character as a "mews house." The building is constructed of fine quality red brick with stone dressings and features a tiled roof, reflecting the restrained late Queen Anne Arts and Crafts style of Balfour and Turner.
It has two storeys, a basement, and a dormered attic. The front facade is irregular, with a shallow parapeted entrance bay at the corner, which includes a rusticated pilastered doorway flanked by small segmental arched flush framed windows, and one flush framed glazing bar sash window on the first floor. The recessed right-hand section has three closely set flush framed glazing bar sash windows with segmental arches on the ground floor and flat arches on the first floor.
There is a deep bracketed stone eaves cornice and two large gabled dormers. The gabled return to the mews features a brown glazed brick ground floor with three light windows under segmental arches, accented by rusticated dressings to the reveals. The building is topped with tall panelled brick and stone chimney stacks, and Arts and Crafts ironwork is present in the area railings. This house is part of Balfour and Turner's redevelopment of this area, which also includes Nos. 3 and 4 Aldford Street and Balfour Mews.
