Description

No. 3 Aldford Street is a corner house built around 1898-99 by Balfour and Turner as part of the redevelopment of Mayfair for the Grosvenor Estate. The building features red brick with Portland stone dressings and a plain tiled roof, showcasing restrained Arts and Crafts detailing influenced by late 17th-century domestic architecture. It consists of three storeys, a basement, and a dormered attic beneath half-hipped roofs, with two irregular bays. The right side of the front projects at the ground and first floors, featuring a cornice-hood doorway and a flush framed glazing bar sash light, with a rectangular window above. The left side has coupled flush framed segmental arched glazing bar sashes set in a recessed area. There is a coved eaves cornice and casement dormers. The gabled return to the mews displays irregular fenestration and a corbelled external stack, projecting from the building line of the mews and balancing the related No. 23 South Street. The property is enclosed by cast iron area railings with Arts and Crafts detailing.
