Description
No. 24 South Street is a terraced town house built around 1834, likely designed by Gandy Deering. The building features painted brick with a channelled stucco ground floor and a slate roof. Its imposing and austere façade showcases a sparse Greek Revival style, particularly noticeable in the basement area of the porch. The house consists of three tall main storeys, with the ground floor elevated on a basement, and includes a tall attic storey with a dormered mansard roof.
To the left, there is a severe prostyle stucco Doric porch with piers, leading up to a square-headed door that has a fanlight and sidelights. The recessed sash windows, which have glazing bars, are adorned with a plat band that runs across the tops on the ground floor. The stucco continues as a parapet applied to the first floor, with a coping that serves as a sill course for the first-floor windows. These windows, along with those above, are recessed under flat gauged arches. The building also features a stone cornice and stucco frieze over the second floor, with a cornice coping at the sheer attic storey.
The first floor has cast iron window guards, and the area railings are made of cast iron with acorn finials. An original lead rainwater head is present, and the rear elevation is bowed. Inside, the interiors are very lofty, featuring two stone staircases with cast iron balustrades and simple Greek mouldings.
