Description
The lamp post outside 37-38 St James's Place is a gas lamp post of the 'Brompton' style, likely made by S Pontifex and Company in the late 19th century or early 20th century, with a Grosvenor lantern that was probably installed around 1930.
It is constructed from cast iron, featuring a glazed lantern made of iron and copper. The ornate column has a tapered shaft with an octagonal section, decorated with acanthus leaves, and sits on a rectangular base. Unusually, the base of the column is elevated, causing the four slots for the gas supply to be visible above the pavement. A registration plaque on the base shows the number 8047 and includes the manufacturer's name, S. PONTIFEX & CO.
At the top, the column supports a Grosvenor lantern, which is held up by a four-legged frog. The lantern features tapered and curved glazing panels encased in copper, with decorative fretwork and an ogee finial on the tent. There is an access hatch at the top of the tent, indicating it likely predates the Second World War. Inside the lantern, there is a four-mantle burner, an enamel reflector, and a Horstmann 14-day control clock.
