Description

This is a terrace of houses built in 1880 on Fifth Avenue, Westminster. They were designed by Austin and Roland Plumbe for the Queen’s Park Estate, intended to provide housing for artisans, labourers, and other residents. The terrace is constructed of yellow brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with irregular red brick banding and detailing. The roof is covered in Welsh slate.

The terrace consists of two storeys, with each house originally having two bays, although the end houses feature projecting bays. The architectural style is Free Gothic. Each house has a gabled porch supported by corbels, containing a pair of entrances with half-glazed doors and overlights, all set beneath red gauged brick arches. A ceramic date plaque is visible on the porch gable, which also has painted coping. The end houses have entrances on their return walls. The windows are paired sashes, with dividing colonettes and painted lintels. Above, the windows are mainly sashes with sills on corbels and painted lintels. A moulded brick eaves course runs along the top of the terrace, and corniced stacks are present. The terrace forms part of the main street within the Queen’s Park Estate.
