Description

The Former New Scotland Yard, known as the Norman Shaw South Building, is a significant extension of the Metropolitan Police's old headquarters. Designed by Norman Shaw with John Dixon Butler, it was constructed between 1904 and 1906, following designs from 1896 to 1898. The building features red brick with Portland stone banding and dressings set on a granite podium, topped with a slate roof. It continues the architectural style of the north building, combining Flemish and English Baroque influences, but is designed for a narrower site, which gives it a stronger vertical emphasis.

The structure consists of four storeys, a basement, and three tiers of attics beneath a steep roof. The front facing the Embankment has five windows and includes a narrow left-hand pediment gabled break, along with a tourelle at the right-hand corner that matches the north building, featuring a large elaborated pediment gable return. The podium has plain, recessed, mullioned-transomed casements, with single-storey blind wings connected by tall railings that enclose a forecourt. The upper floors have stone architraved windows, with the central two being larger and adorned with segmental pediments on the second floor and keystoned segmental arches on the third floor. The large gable end return is topped with an obelisk finialed aedicule at the apex. Additionally, there is a massive blind south gable end with stone banding and lofty banded chimney stacks. A segmental arched bridge-link, made of stone banded red brick, connects the south building to the North Building.
