Description
This building, located at 19-23 Ryder Street SW1, is a Grade II listed corner block of shops, chambers, and flats, constructed between 1901 and 1902 by architect Robert J. Worley. It features a combination of red brick and buff terracotta with a slate roof, designed in a Free Jacobethan style. The structure stands four storeys tall and is four windows wide, with a seven-window return to Bury Street.
The ground floor retains its original shop fronts, which include wood transomed and framed windows and doors set between panelled pilasters that support an entablature. The upper floors are adorned with mullioned and transomed casement windows, which are round-headed in narrow bays. There are two-storey oriel bows on the first and second floors facing Bury Street, and two windows spanning the second and third floors on Ryder Street.
The first floor is articulated by terracotta columns and features a terracotta balustraded balcony that bows in front of the narrow bays. The window openings are dressed with terracotta quoining, and there are terracotta strings at the transom level. A dentil cornice runs above the top floor, topped by a balustraded parapet. The building is also distinguished by its prominent Jacobethan patterned terracotta chimneys.
