Description

Numbers 6 to 14 Grosvenor Place, 41 Chapel Street, and the mews arch to Halkin Street are grand terraced houses built around 1868, designed by Thomas Cundy III. They are constructed from Portland stone and feature a fishscale slate mansard roof in a "French Renaissance" style. The buildings rise four storeys plus an attic and basement, with the centre and end houses projecting forward and having individual mansard roofs. Each house has three windows across its facade, with channelling at the ground floor. They also have projecting Corinthian porches supported by granite columns, arched windows on the first floor, and a continuous cast iron balcony. Other windows are square-headed with architraves and plate glass. There is some polychrome decoration in pink sandstone, granite, and mastic inlay, along with a rich cornice, pedimented dormers, and tall elaborate slab chimneys. An area balustrade is present, and the building returns to the right and left, with the right side featuring the mews arch. The interiors have not been inspected.
