Description
This is an incomplete block of purpose-built flats, designed to resemble a palatial facade, dating to circa 1868 and designed by Thomas Cundy III. The building is constructed of stone with shaped slate mansard roofs and is executed in a French Renaissance style. It comprises four storeys plus an attic mansard and a basement. Each house is three windows wide. Numbers 36 and 44 project slightly forward, distinguished by rusticated quoins and taller mansard roofs. Prominent Corinthian porches are set beneath arches. A continuous cast iron balcony runs across the first floor. Windows are square-headed on the ground and first floors, round-headed on the second floor, and segmental on the third floor. Pediments top the dormers, with oval dormers positioned above them. A richly decorated modillion cornice runs above the third floor. Slab chimneys are present, along with iron cresting to the roof ridge. An area balustrade completes the exterior.
