Description
The Statue of Marshal Foch is a Grade II* listed bronze equestrian statue mounted on a pedestal made of Portland stone. The statue, which stands 3.2 meters high, depicts Marshal Foch in service dress, seated on a horse. It is set on a pedestal that is 3.85 meters tall. The south face of the pedestal features the inscription: FOCH/ 1851-1929. The east face bears the words: 'I AM CONSCIOUS/ OF HAVING SERVED ENGLAND/ AS I SERVED MY OWN COUNTRY.' The north face includes a detailed inscription that lists his titles: MARECHAL FERDINAND FOCH/ MARECHAL DE L'ARMEE/ BRITANNIQUE GRAND CROIX DE LA LEGION D'HONNEUR/ MEDAILLE MILITAIRE/ MEMBRE DE L'ACADEMY FRANCAISE GCB/ OM/ DCL/ MARSHAL OF FRANCE 1918/ GENERALISSIMO OF ALLIED ARMIES 1918/ BRITISH FIELD MARSHAL 1919.
Originally, there was an inscribed bronze plaque on the sloping stone of the west face of the pedestal, but this has been removed, leaving only the stone. Additionally, a small stone tablet has been placed in the paving in front of the statue, which reads: CETTE STATUE DU MARECHAL FOCH EST L'OEUVRE DU SCULPTEUR/ FRANCAIS GEORGES MALISSARD (1877-1942)/ ELLE FUT INAUGUREE LE 5 JUIN 1930/ PAR SON ALTESSE ROYALE LE PRINCE DE GALLES.
