Description

This is a row of terraced townhouses at 10-20 Seymour Street, located in the City of Westminster. They were built around 1780-90 as part of the Portman Estate development. The buildings are constructed of stock brick, with number 20 stuccoed. They have concealed slate roofs. There are four storeys, with number 14 having five, and all have basements. Each front is three windows wide. Semicircular arched doorways are present on the right-hand side, with those of numbers 10 to 16 having rusticated surrounds (likely made of Coade stone). The doorways contain panelled doors, some with side lights and pilaster jambs, topped by fanlights. The windows are recessed sash windows under flat, gauged arches. Number 20 has an early 19th-century pilaster framed shop front and pilaster treatment above the ground floor, with the upper windows set within stucco architraves. The buildings are topped with parapets and stone copings. Continuous balconies with geometric patterned cast or wrought iron railings run along the first floor. Cast iron area railings with urn finials are also present. A London County Council plaque on number 12 records it as the former residence of the composer M.W. Balfe.
