Description
No 21 Dean's Yard, also known as Abbey Shop, is a building dating from around 1800, originally constructed as offices for the Dean and Chapter. It is located at the rear of the Jerusalem Chamber, adjacent to Broad Sanctuary. The building is designed in the Tudor-Gothic style and features brick construction with stone dressings. It stands three storeys tall, with a basement and dormers, and has an asymmetrical front that is two windows wide.
The left side of the building includes a porch with a steeply coped gable above a four-centred stone archway. There is a full-height canted bay with stone mullioned and transomed leaded iron casements, which have arched Tudor-Gothic heads. The building is adorned with weathered strings and a parapet that has weathered coping. At the rear, there is a single-storey buttressed wing that features a parapet and 1950s Georgian Gothic windows for the Abbey Shop. Additionally, cast iron Gothic area railings are present. This building is included in the heritage listing for its group value in relation to Scott's terrace.
