Description
The Sanctuary is a terrace of houses located on Broad Sanctuary in the City of Westminster, built between 1853 and 1854 by Sir George Gilbert Scott. Constructed from Bath stone with gault brick and stone elements facing Dean's Yard, the buildings feature slate roofs and exhibit a Gothic style with some early Tudor characteristics. The design is asymmetrical, centered around a formal gatehouse that has an octagonal turret and battlements, creating a lively and varied skyline.
The terrace consists of four storeys, including basements and dormered attics, with each house having two or three window-wide fronts. The doorways are pointed and feature four-centred arches, some arranged in pairs or set to the right, with several designed as recessed porches. The windows are stone mullioned, with some showcasing tracery, and include rectangular through-storey bay windows and oriels. Additional architectural details include traceried balconies, buttresses, stepped gables, and battlements.
The ornate iron gates lead to a vaulted carriageway, and there are decorative Gothic area railings. The rear of the terrace facing Dean's Yard is simpler, featuring stone mullioned windows and rectangular oriel bays, with single-storey rear extensions to Nos. 2 and 3. The front areas display fine Gothic ironwork, and the party boundary walls of Nos. 4 and 5 are topped with ornate Gothic lamps that flank the approach to the gatehouse.
