Description
The Serpentine Art Gallery, originally built as refreshment rooms, was constructed between 1933 and 1934 and designed by J. Grey West, the chief architect of the Office of Works. The building features grey brick with red dressings and has a hipped tiled roof at the eaves. It is roughly square in plan and consists of a single storey, with a two-storey core that projects upward in the center, topped by a tall hipped roof and a timber cupola, although the balustrade is now missing. The lower parts have a flat roof. The sides of the building have nine bays, with the central three bays on three sides featuring paired Doric columns and a balustrade above. The open entrance is recessed to the north, and there are square-headed French windows with small panes and timber glazing bars. The taller section includes half dormer windows with segmental pediments and a cornice. At the rear, two service wings are attached and treated in a similar architectural style.
