Description
The Prince Consort National Memorial, also known as the Albert Memorial, is a Grade I listed memorial located in Kensington Gore, Westminster. It was constructed between 1862 and 1875, designed by George Gilbert Scott, with contributions from various Victorian artists and craftsmen. The memorial features a square podium that is decoratively paved and accessed by steps on the south side. There are superimposed podia with steps on all sides, topped by a canopy resembling a ciborium, supported by clustered granite columns at each corner.
The structure includes an elaborate sculptured spire and a giant seated figure of Prince Albert inside. Gables adorn all sides, with pinnacles positioned between them. At the base, a richly sculptured band extends outward at the corners to support sculptured groups that represent the industrial arts: Agriculture, Manufacture, Commerce, and Engineering. Additionally, there are further sculptured groups at the four corners of the stepped podium representing Europe, Asia, Africa, and America, all linked by intricate railings. The monument is adorned with extensive figure and other sculptures, incorporating various decorative techniques, including mosaic and enamel.
