Description
St James The Less Parish Rooms and Schools is a parish rooms and school building constructed in 1861 by G.E. Street, with additions made in 1890 by his son A.E. Street. The building features red brick with some black brick and stone dressings, topped with a slate roof. It showcases a bold and simple Gothic style that aligns with the nearby church, creating an integrated composition.
The structure includes a single-storey hall with a gabled return and two-storey school rooms, along with a one-storey extension. The long side of the hall has six windows, while the return gable end features a large window. The schoolrooms are designed with three gabled bays and a gable over one bay extension. Entrances are located on the southwest elevations facing the playground. The windows are three-light simple Gothic designs, some with plate tracery, and the schoolroom windows are large with mullions and transoms. The steep gable end roofs are adorned with ridge cresting and finials.
