Description

This is a terrace of ten houses, numbers 14 to 22 Portsea Place, built in the 1820s for the Bishop of London's Trustees. The design is attributed to S P Cockerell. The houses are constructed of brown brick with channelled stucco to the ground floors. They are three storeys high with a basement. Each house has two bays. The basement railings rise to flank the steps leading to the entrances. Number 14 has a shop front with fixed window lights. The remaining houses feature round-arched recesses containing doors, each with a fanlight flanked by consoles. The windows are mostly sash windows with glazing bars. A decorative iron balcony is located on the first floor. Flat, gauged brick arches top the upper windows. A stucco parapet is present on number 19. A blue plaque commemorates the author Olive Schreiner (1855–1920) on number 16.
