Description
Burlington Arcade is a shopping arcade built between 1818 and 1819 by Samuel Ware. The Piccadilly elevation features a first-floor loggia added by Beresford Pike in 1911, and the original triple arched entrance was altered by Pike in 1931. The Burlington Gardens elevation was replaced in 1937. The arcade's roof is supported by arches that create a tent-like ceiling with glazed roof-lights. The arches divide the arcade into bays of two shops, which have projecting and recessed display windows with entablatures and tripartite sashed lights on the first floor. On Piccadilly, Pike added a stone-faced first-floor arcaded loggia with a parapet and rebuilt the large camber arched entrance in an Edwardian-Baroque style in 1931. The original elevation by Ware on Burlington Gardens was replaced by a plain Portland stone-faced parapeted front, featuring Lord Chesham's coat of arms, above a camber arched opening on low pylons, designed by E. Bates and W. G. Sinning. The arcade was badly damaged in 1940 but was restored in 1954.
