Description
The monument to Christopher Cass the Elder is located on the east side of St John's Gardens, off Horseferry Road. This Grade II listed structure was erected in memory of Christopher Cass, a prominent mason who lived from 1678 to 1734. The monument is made of granite and takes the form of a massive sarcophagus with a segmental lid, featuring an entablature and niches on its sides. It is believed to have been designed by Cass himself. The inscription reads: "CHRR CASS/ MASTER MASON/ TO HIS/ MAJ ORDNANCE/ DY'D APR. 21 1734". Cass was known for his work on significant buildings such as St John's Smith Square and Blenheim Palace. This monument is noted as the earliest granite monument in England.
