Description

Nos 62 and 64 Horseferry Road is a former shelter for destitute boys and a lodging house for very poor working lads, built between 1912 and 1913 and designed by A E Hughes. The building is constructed of red brick with stone dressings and stands five storeys tall, including a full attic storey with dormers. The facade facing Horseferry Road features five bays, while there is an eight-bay return to the left. It has rusticated quoins and entrances located to the left and right of the facade. The windows are square-headed, flush framed with sashes and glazing bars, and feature keystones. There is a circular window to the left at the third floor level, which is topped with a semi-circular stone hood. Above the third floor, there is a modillion cornice. The building holds considerable historic interest, particularly due to its connections with the movement to emigrate destitute boys.
