Description

This is a terrace of houses built in 1880 by Austin and Roland Plumbe, designed for the Queen's Park Estate, intended to provide housing for artisans, labourers, and general residents. The terrace comprises numbers 84 to 98 on Fifth Avenue and is constructed of yellow brick laid in a Flemish bond, with decorative bands and detailing in irregular red brick. The roof is covered in Welsh slate, with bands of fish-scale tiling to the tower roof.

The terrace consists of two storeys, with each house originally having two bays. The north end has a projecting two-bay block with a pyramidal roof forming a tower feature. The architectural style is Free Gothic. Gabled porches, supported on corbels, contain paired entrances; these have half-glazed doors with overlights set beneath red brick arches with stone keys. A ceramic date plaque is set into the gable of the porch, and there is painted brickwork. The windows are paired sashes with dividing colonettes, and painted brick lintels. Above these are further sashes, some with margin lights, each with sills on corbels and painted lintels. A moulded brick eaves course is present, along with corniced chimney stacks. The house at the south end has an entrance on the return wall and is designed to resemble a tower, featuring paired sashes to both floors and a pyramidal roof with a finial.

This terrace, together with numbers 67-81, 83-97, and 68-82, forms a balanced group of buildings. The “tower” features at the north and south ends contribute to the character of the main street within the Queen’s Park Estate.
