Description

Nos 41 and 43 on Brook Street are terrace houses built in 1725, which were remodeled as one building in 1853, with the left half of the front designed by Sir Charles Barry. They were further remodeled between 1913 and 1919 by Wimperis and Simpson for the Bath Club. The houses are constructed of stuccoed brick and topped with a slate roof. They rise four storeys above a basement and feature canted dormers. Originally, there were four window fronts that have been combined into one. The ground floor is channelled and has quoin pilasters. A central two-storey canted bay is present on the ground and first floors, with Doric porches flanking each end. The first-floor windows have stucco balustered balconettes, and there is balustrading over the porches. A sill course is located on the third floor. The main cornice is heavy and bracketed, leading to a blocking course. All windows are adorned with architrave surrounds; those on the first floor have cornices, while the second-floor windows are eared with sills supported on consoles. Inside, the building retains several 18th-century chimney pieces and original features, along with early 20th-century club fittings. No 43 has an original 18th-century staircase with carved tread ends and turned balusters.
