Description
Terraced town houses at 7-9 Buckingham Gate, dating from approximately 1850-55 and likely designed by Sir James Pennethorne, form part of a group value context. They are constructed of stucco with slate roofs, and display Italianate detailing, which is more elaborate than that found at numbers 4 to 6. The houses extend over four tall storeys, with basements and dormered mansards. Each front is three windows wide, arranged symmetrically in a rhythm of a, b, a, culminating in a pedimented attic storey over number 8. Large Doric portico-porches are present, with those of numbers 7 and 8 paired, and number 9's positioned to the right. The windows are recessed plate glass sashes, with those on the first floor featuring archivolt arched tops. Banded rustication is visible on the ground floor, and pilaster strips decorate the upper storeys. A dentil cornice is located at the first floor level, while a plat band with swags is found on the second floor, and a guilloche band at the third. A dentil crowning cornice and blocking course complete the exterior. Number 8 has a pedimented attic. Numbers 7 and 9 retain the dies of a former balustrade. Cast iron area railings are also present.
