Description

The buildings at 43-45 Welbeck Street are a group of terraced town houses dating from circa 1770-80, constructed as part of the Portland Estate development. They were likely designed by John White. The properties are built of stock brick with channelled stucco to the ground floors, and have slate roofs. They are four storeys high, with a basement, and (at No. 45) an added dormered mansard. Each house has a three-window front.

A semicircular arched doorway is located on the left, at No. 45. This doorway is surrounded by a wooden doorcase with panelled reveals, fluted engaged Pompeian Doric columns, a festooned frieze, and a mutuled cornice. It contains panelled doors and a fanlight. The upper floors have recessed sash windows beneath flat, gauged arches; at No. 45, the first-floor windows have stucco architraves and cornices. A plat band runs over the ground floor, with guilloche enrichment to No. 44. The buildings have parapets with copings.

Mid-19th century enriched cast iron balconettes are present on the first floor of No. 43, while No. 44 has wrought iron balconettes in a Gothick style, and No. 45 has a cast iron balcony with an anthemion pattern. Cast iron area railings, with plumbed spike or flambé torch finials, are also present. The interiors have not been inspected.
