Description

This is a mews row, originally built between 1836 and 1840, likely designed by John Crake as part of the Hyde Park Gardens development. The mews extends to numbers 1 to 21, and includes 14A and 48, which also incorporates 9 Clarendon Place. It features a screen and archway leading to Clarendon Place.

The construction is mainly painted stock brick with stucco dressings, and a slate roof. The north and south elevations are each three windows wide and two storeys high. The windows are recessed sash windows, some with retained glazing bars, set under flat gauged arches. Garage doors, some of which have been altered to create residential spaces, are present on the mews elevation. The south-facing front elevation is blind and finished with a deep entablature and parapet, which has been partially damaged.

Number 14A has a more elaborate mews elevation that encloses a courtyard, with a screen wall and piers, a stucco entablature, and a blocking course. The end elevations of numbers 1 and 48 are treated as blind screen walls with quoin pilasters. A stuccoed carriage archway, topped with an entablature, serves as a formal architectural entrance to the mews, acting as a gateway from Clarendon Place.
