Description

This detached villa, located at 23 Acacia Road in St John's Wood, dates from approximately 1830 to 1840 and was constructed as part of the Portland Estate villa development. The building is stuccoed with a channelled basement and has a slate roof. It exhibits Italianate-Grecian architectural styling, featuring two storeys above a semi-basement. It is three windows wide. A flight of steps leads to the left-hand side entrance, which has a console-corniced and architraved surround to the panelled door and fanlight. The ground floor windows are recessed sashes with margin glazing, set within molded stucco architraves with cornices supported by consoles. Pilasters of the Doric order rise from a plat band just above the semi-basement to a frieze beneath the flat eaves of the low-pitched hipped roof; corniced chimney stacks are positioned to either side. Cast iron guards with a geometric patterned design are present on the windows. A single-bay gig house wing is set back to the left. The design is similar to other villas in the adjacent Eyre Estate.
