Description

This is a row of six terraced townhouses, dating from approximately 1780 to 1790, located on the east side of Upper Wimpole Street in Westminster. They were likely designed by John White for the Portland Estate. The houses are constructed of stock brick with a channelled stucco finish to the ground floor. They have concealed slate roofs and extend over four storeys, with a basement level. Each house has a three-window front.

The wide doorways are semicircular with keystones. They contain panelled doors, side lights and pilaster dividers – at Nos 1 to 4, No 1 features delicate oval astragals, while Nos 2 and 6 have pilaster jambs, fluted or reeded doorheads, and patterned fanlights. The recessed sash windows on the upper floors are topped by flat, gauged arches. A plat band runs above the stucco ground floor. Sill bands are present on the second floor of Nos 1 and 6. The parapets are topped with copings; No 3 features an enriched frieze to a later stucco entablature, along with a pierced parapet. Area railings with spiked finials are also present. The interiors remain uninspected.
