Description

Devonshire House gates to Green Park and gatepiers, located opposite number 90 Piccadilly, are early 18th century features. They consist of very fine wrought iron ornamental gates and Palladian gate piers made of Portland stone. The design includes double carriage gates between standards and side gates, with an ornamental overthrow, all set between piers that are tooled with deeply vermiculated rustication and adorned with festooned friezes below cornice cappings, which are topped by bronze sphinxes. The gates originally belonged to Lord Heathfield's house at Turnham Green. After the house was demolished in 1837, the gates were purchased by the Duke of Devonshire for Chiswick House at the Burlington Lane entrance. In 1897, they were moved to Devonshire House on Piccadilly, and in 1921, they were relocated to their current site following the demolition of Devonshire House.
