Description

This is a group of houses, numbers 66 to 74, Lancaster Gate, London. Dating to 1865, they were designed by John Johnson as part of a grand terrace. The houses are constructed of stucco with slate mansard roofs. They are four storeys high with a basement and attic, and numbers 67, 72, and 74 project slightly forward. These three houses have rusticated quoins and Ionic half columns with segmental pediments above the central window of each. The ground floor is channelled, and features paired, projecting Doric porches with panelled doors. A stucco balcony runs along the first floor, and architraves frame the windows above the ground floor. The first-floor windows are round-headed, while the others are square-headed. Cornices are present above the first and second-floor windows. The windows are sash windows with plate glass. A rich console cornice sits above the third floor, with a smaller cornice above the attic. The attic windows are square-headed except for those in numbers 72 and 74, which are round-headed. Cast iron area railings are present. The terrace is part of a larger development including numbers 56 to 62 and is integral to the planned layout of Lancaster Gate.
