Description
Nos 156 to 170 on Fifth Avenue is a terrace of houses built in the 19th century, with Nos 166-168 dated 1874 and the others from 1876. Designed by architects Austin and Roland Plumbe for the Queen's Park Estate of the Artisans, Labourers and General Dwellings Company, the buildings are constructed of yellow brick with red brick dressings and feature a Welsh slate roof. Each house is two storeys high and consists of two bays, showcasing a Free Gothic style.
The gabled porches, supported by corbels, contain paired entrances with half-glazed doors. There is a ceramic date plaque on the gables. No 170 has a 19th-century shop front on the ground floor. No 168 features a three-storey tower with two bays, pointed blind tympana above the windows, and a gauged brick pointed arch doorway. The windows include paired sashes with a dividing colonette and painted lintels, while the upper floors mainly have sash windows. A moulded brick eaves course adds to the architectural detail. This terrace is an integral part of the main street of the estate.
