Description
Raine's House, built in 1719, was originally founded as a school by Henry Raine but has been used for various purposes since the school closed in the 19th century. The building is constructed of brown brick with red brick dressings and features a parapet, along with a stucco plinth. It stands two storeys high and has seven windows, with a two-windowed wing on the east that was formerly the Schoolmaster's house. There was a similar wing on the west side that is no longer present. The building is adorned with brick Corinthian pilasters that extend the full height at each end of the main block and on each side of the central bay, which contains a now-closed entrance. The ground floor windows have segmental heads, while the first-floor windows feature semi-circular heads, except for the second and sixth openings, which have pedimented niches. The windows have flush frames with glazing bars, although these are now covered. The entrance to the Schoolmaster's house is located on the return side. Currently, the buildings are in a derelict condition. Two contemporary figures of a boy and a girl that were once in the niches, along with other original objects from the school, are preserved at the modern Raine's Foundation School in Arbour Square.
