Description
The warehouses, numbered 1 to 5 consecutively, including vaults, were built around 1804 and designed by architect D A Alexander. The western end of No 1 Warehouse features a two-storey pedimented addition from 1911, constructed in stock brick with stone dressings. The main structure is made of yellow stock brick, accented by a stone cornice and blocking course, although much of the original blocking course has been replaced with a brick parapet. A white stone band runs at the height of the first floor, and there is a massive rusticated white stone plinth. The buildings rise four storeys and have segmental arches above recessed windows, some of which have been partially bricked in with smaller windows added, featuring glazing bars. The springings for warehouses Nos 2 to 5 indicate an intended vault that was never built, which would have connected at the first floor level with the Pennington Street Warehouses. The listed building is part of a group that includes the walls and other structures of The London Docks.
