Description
The surviving boundary walls of the former London Docks, specifically the Western Dock, are located at Thomas More Street, East Smithfield, Redmead Lane, Pennington Street, Wapping Lane, Reardon Street, and Tench Street. These walls include gate piers at the south end of Hermitage Basin, a wall to the south-east of Hermitage Basin, gate piers and an attached wall at the north-east end of Pier Head, and a boundary wall to the north and west of St John's churchyard.
These sections of the boundary walls were originally built between 1801 and 1805 by surveyor Daniel Alexander and engineer John Rennie. The walls are constructed from stock brick, with some areas showing patching. Many sections have been reduced in height, and several modern openings have been added. At the south end of Hermitage Basin, there are two pairs of gate piers featuring white stone caps and plinths with heavy vermiculation. A similar pair of gate piers is found at the north-east end of Pier Head, marking the former entrance to Wapping Basin.
The listed buildings and walls of the London Docks are recognized as a group.
