Description
The 1st Surrey Rifles War Memorial is located to the north of St Giles Church. It features a tall wheel-head cross with an octagonal cross shaft, which stands on a tall plinth and a square, three-stepped base. The front face of the cross-head is carved with the letters CON/ COR/ DIA, while the rear displays VIK/ T/ RIX.
On the front (north) face of the plinth, there is a hooded stone panel that holds a bronze plaque displaying the Regimental badge from 1908-1919. The main dedicatory inscription reads: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN MEMORY OF THE OFFICERS NCOS AND MEN OF THE FIRST SURREY RIFLES WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1919."
The rear of the plinth features a similar plaque listing the battle honours for the 1st Battalion, which include: Aubers, Festubert 1915, Loos, Somme 1916, 1918, Flers, Courcelles, Messines 1917, Ypres 1917, Cambrai 1917, St Quentin, Bapaume 1918, Ancre 1918, Amiens, Albert 1918, and the Pursuit to Mons in France and Flanders from 1915-1918. It also lists honours for the 2nd Battalion, including Doiran 1917, Macedonia 1916-1917, Gara-el Mughar, Nebi Samwi, Jerusalem, Jericho, Jordan, Tell Asur, and Palestine from 1917-1918.
A small bronze plaque on the east face of the plinth commemorates those of the regiment who served in the South African War from 1899-1902. The west face contains a dedication to the Second World War, stating: "ALSO TO THE MEMORY OF OUR COMRADES WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE WORLD WAR 1939 – 1945."
