Description
The waiting room at Camberwell New Cemetery, built between 1928 and 1929 by Aston Webb and his son, Maurice, is now used as a utility shed. It features rubble masonry with stone dressings and blue-green slate laid in diminishing courses.
The exterior is a single-storey structure with a gable-facing attic dormer that has one window range on the returns. The ground floor has a three-bay, round-arched loggia, with each pier designed as a battered buttress. The loggia's returns are pierced by a round-arched opening, and there is moulded coping along the low parapet above. The entrance, which is symmetrically arched, is set behind the centre bay of the loggia and features a boarded door of original design. Flanking the entrance are three-light, segmental-arched windows with simply moulded mullions. One return has a two-light, flat-arched window that extends from the ground floor to the attic. At the rear, there is a single-storey, gabled extension. All windows are adorned with moulded stone mullions.
The building has a Gothic feel but also reflects an Arts and Crafts sensibility through its attention to detail, materials, and workmanship. It forms a group with the Gates, Lodge, and Mortuary Chapels.
