Description
The Lodge at Camberwell New Cemetery is a cemetery lodge built between 1928 and 1929, designed by Sir Aston Webb and his son, Maurice. It features rubble masonry with stone dressings and blue-green slate laid in diminishing courses. The building is single storey with an attic.
The lodge has a round-arched loggia with three bays, which has been filled in with a doorway and glazed wood screens. Each supporting pier is designed as a battered buttress, and there is a parapet with coping above. The returns of the loggia include round-arched windows, while the right return has a flat-arched, two-light window with stone mullions and transoms that extends from the ground floor into the gable end. There is also a single flat-arched attic light above. A rear extension has been added for conveniences.
Although it has a Gothic feel, the lodge displays a careful attention to detailing, materials, and workmanship that aligns more closely with the Arts and Crafts movement.
The Lodge is located to the northeast of the cemetery gates and is part of a group that includes the Gates, Waiting Room, and Mortuary Chapels.
