Description

The Crematorium at Camberwell New Cemetery, built in 1939 by Maurice Webb, is a Grade II listed building. It features a red brick plinth and grey brick in Flemish bond, with stone dressings. The structure has a high pyramidal roof covered in copper for the tower and a hipped roof of green pantiles for the chapel.

Designed in an Italian Renaissance style with influences from contemporary Scandinavian design, the building has a shallow, square chancel of one bay, a nave of two bays, and a narthex. There are ancillary structures to the ritual southeast and a loggia of seven bays to the ritual east, with offices and a stack to the north and northwest.

The west elevation showcases three flat-arched entrances, with the central entrance featuring a semicircular tympanum that has low relief carving of the Holy Spirit. This elevation is divided into three bays by four giant Composite order pilasters, with quarter pilasters at the porch corners. The square tower has flush corner quoins and resembles the tower of St Mark's in Venice. The east elevation is particularly notable for its round-arched loggia between the end bays, with the rear wall displaying memorial plaques and round-arched openings leading to the chapel and offices. There are post-World War II additions to the ritual north.

Inside, the crematorium has plain walls with high windows, a coffered ceiling, and a moulded chancel arch supported by fluted piers. The seating and furnishings are of an original design. Overall, the crematorium presents a subtle and handsome design that reflects the seriousness of its purpose.
