Description
The gates, piers, and railings at Camberwell New Cemetery were constructed between 1928 and 1929. They are made of stone, with metal railings and gates featuring coats of arms. The main entrance consists of a single carriageway framed by a pair of square piers, each topped with square capstones and spheres. The faces of the piers have recessed panels decorated with a cornice block just below the moulded capstone. On either side of the carriageway, there are additional piers of the same design that frame a pedestrian walkway.
Attached to the eastern pier is a single-storey watch house, also square in plan, which has an additional pier of the same style. The gates and railings feature plain uprights, a frieze along the top, and a dado rail below. These gates, piers, and railings are noted for their group value, as they complement the Waiting Room, Lodge, and Mortuary Chapels of Camberwell New Cemetery.
