Description

The remains consist of a church tower and portal, built in 1876 in the Early English style by James Fowler of Louth. The church itself was demolished after being damaged by an air raid in 1941, leaving only the tower and portal standing.

The tower and portal are constructed from Kentish ragstone with ashlar detailing. The tower is a square, four-stage structure, with a single-storey portal wall attached to it on the north-east side.

The tower has tapering sides, with corner buttresses and octagonal pinnacles topped with conical roofs. The bell stage features wooden louvres set within triple arches. The third stage has trefoil arches and colonnettes, and a clock face on the north-east side. The second stage has an arched window with colonnettes, and the lowest stage features an arched doorcase with wooden double doors. The south-east side of the tower has cement rendering to the two lower stages, a large arched opening, and a smaller Caernarvon-arched doorway.

The portal wall retains a highly decorated arched doorway. The outer section has a pointed arch supported by piers with two attached columns on each side, while the inner section has a semicircular cusped arch carried by piers with a single attached column each. The tympanum above the arch contains a sculpted figure of Christ in Majesty, framed by a mandorla and flanked by demi figures of angels and banners.
