Description

Kennington Underground Station is an underground station built between 1890 and 1925, designed by T.P. Figgis for the City and South London Railway. The exterior features red brick with white stone dressings, a brick parapet, and at the rear, a large lead dome resting on a roughcast drum, topped by a small cupola. The building is classical in style, with a one-storey height, a two-bay front, a canted corner, and a six-bay return to Braganza Street. Stone pilasters on a plinth support an entablature that defines the bays. The left front bay is wider and includes a shop window under an elliptical arch. To the right, there is a doorway with a moulded stone architrave, frieze, and cornice. The main entrance is located on the canted corner and features a new canopy and tiled parapet. A set-back entrance bay at the right end of the return elevation has a round-arched doorway, which is now blocked up, with brick voussoirs, a keystone, and an entablature on consoles. The booking hall has been altered and includes a roof lantern and plain tiling. The dome originally housed the workings of a hydraulic lift. This station is historically significant as one of the first stations on the original City and South London Railway and is notable for retaining much of its original character.
