Description

Numbers 13-23 form a terrace of six cottages dating from around 1903 to 1914 and built as part of an estate under the direction of Octavia Hill for the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, with Cluttons acting as builder. The cottages are constructed from yellow brick with red brick detailing, featuring a high-pitched red tiled roof with a red brick stepped cornice, and a stuccoed plinth. Each cottage has two storeys and two bays in a cottage style. Nos. 13 and 23 have plaster gables that span the full width of the front. Most cottages have paired doorways sheltered by a tiled canopy supported by wooden braces, with replacement doors that include oblong fanlights. Sash windows with glazing bars are set within cambered, gauged red brick arches, with bracketed sills; most are paired, except those on the first floor beneath the gables. Red brick sill bands are also present. The interiors have not been inspected. Subsidiary features include area railings with spearhead standards. The terrace has group value with Aycliffe House to the south and with numbers 1, 1A and 3-11 Portland Street, all also designated at Grade II.
