Description
This is an estate cottage located to the southeast of Dulwich Picture Gallery, dating from the early 19th century. It was possibly designed by Sir John Soane in connection with the Picture Gallery and Mausoleum. The cottage is constructed of brick in stretcher bond on the west-facing and south-facing elevations, while the remaining walls are in Flemish bond. It features a hipped slate roof and has an L-shaped plan, with the angle of the L facing Gallery Road and the south. There are entrances located at the angle and along the return parallel to Gallery Road.
The cottage is two storeys high. The south-facing elevation has one window, and there is a one-window range on the projecting west elevation facing Gallery Road. The inner corner of the L has two window ranges on the west-facing elevation, and the north-facing elevation also features two windows. All ground-floor windows are either segmental or camber-arched, while the first-floor windows are flat-arched. A flat-arched entrance is located at the west end in a full-height bay with quadrant corners, and there is a second flat-arched entrance on the west return from the inner corner. An attached brick wall in Flemish bond extends east from the rear of the cottage and then turns north towards the Gallery, although it has been rebuilt in parts. The interior has not been inspected. The cottage forms a group with the Dulwich Picture Gallery and Mausoleum.
