Description

A terrace of 18 houses dating from the late 18th century, situated on the east side of Kennington Park Road in Southwark. The buildings are constructed of brown and yellow stock brick, some with stucco or red brick dressings, and are roofed in slate or tiles. War damage has been repaired and some restoration and later alterations have been undertaken.

The houses are predominantly of three storeys with basements and attics, arranged in two bays each, with two windows and a door to each ground floor. Exceptions include No. 119, which is four bays wide, and No. 121, which is three bays to each floor. No. 87 features a single-storey set-back entrance extension to its left return.

Most houses have mansard roofs with dormers, except Nos. 95 and 97. The roofs of Nos. 91–117 sit behind brick parapets. Nos. 87, 105–107 and 119 have roofs behind stucco parapets with cornice and blocking course; No. 89 has a stucco parapet only; No. 119 also includes a frieze. No. 97, which projects slightly, has a cornice and low triangular pediment in front of its parapet.

The entrance doors show considerable variety in decorative treatment. Round-arched entrances in round-arched recesses with decorative fanlights appear on all but Nos. 93, 99 and 103. No. 89 has a moulded cornice head; No. 93 features reeded jambs and a cornice head; No. 95 has a reeded cornice head. No. 97 displays a stucco springing band to the door with panelled jambs. No. 99 is detailed with fluted Egyptian pilaster jambs, a reeded cornice head and retains its original door. No. 101 has a moulded stucco architrave with fluted Tuscan pilasters, fluted Egyptian pilaster jambs and a reeded cornice head. No. 103 has a reeded cornice head and fluted pilaster jambs. No. 105 features a cornice head, moulded stucco architrave and pilasters. No. 107 has a moulded cornice head, moulded stucco architrave and pilasters. No. 109 features a stucco lined reveal with moulded cornice head and original door. Nos. 111 and 113 have doors with moulded cornice heads in stucco lined reveals; the door to No. 111 is original. No. 115 has reeded pilaster jambs, a moulded cornice head and original door. No. 117 features attached reeded three-quarter columns, reeded jambs and a cornice head. No. 119 has steps up to the door with fluted pilaster jambs, a cornice head and stucco springing band. No. 121 has short Doric columns to the doorway bearing an entablature below a break-front cornice head and moulded stucco springing band.

All houses except Nos. 87, 89 and 105 are fitted with sash windows. Nos. 91 and 95–99 have windows with glazing bars; all but Nos. 87, 89 and the second floors of Nos. 109, 115 and 117 have flat gauged-brick arches. Nos. 105 and 107 have modern glazing. No. 87 has moulded stucco architraves to casement windows with leaded lights; those to the ground floor have segmental pediments, those to the first floor have triangular pediments, and those to the second floor are eared. No. 89 has stucco architraves and flat cornices on brackets to mullioned and transomed windows. No. 97 has ground-floor windows in round-arched recesses. No. 119 has round-arched ground-floor windows in round-arched recesses with stucco springing band and moulded stucco bases resting on the basement plinth; the first-floor windows have flat cornices on brackets. No. 121 has ground-floor windows similar to No. 119 but with plain arches. All houses have a stucco sill band at first-floor level.

The interiors were not inspected at the time of listing. Area and dividing railings, some original, form part of the heritage listing.
