Description
This is a terrace of five houses, numbers 3 to 11, located on the south side of Gladstone Street in Southwark. The houses were built between 1849 and 1852 by the architectural practice of Garland and Christopher. They are constructed of yellow stock brick with stucco banding to the ground floor and stucco dressings. The roofs are slate, with some dormers concealed behind a stucco parapet; remnants of the original cornice remain on numbers 7 and 9. Each house has two bays, except for number 11, which has three. Steps lead up to panelled front doors with original fittings and oblong overlights, all within classical doorcases featuring pilasters and a plain entablature and cornice. The ground-floor sash windows have margin lights and keystones that touch the cornice. The first-floor windows are sash windows with glazing bars, set within square-headed stucco architraves. The interior of the houses has not been inspected, but is likely to be of interest. Wrought-iron area railings are attached to the front of the terrace.
